Second World War aircraft spotter, London, UK. Air raid warden using binoculars to look for aircraft during the bombing of London by German airplanes in the Second World War (1939-1945). St Paul's Cathedral is in the background at centre right. When aircraft were spotted, the air raid siren would be sounded, and people would take cover in air raid shelters. The most intense period of bombardment, known as the Blitz, took place from September 1940 to May 1941. In London, over 20,000 civilians were killed, and over a million houses destroyed.
