These sea nymphs were said to be 50 in number and legend said that they helped sailors when attacked by sea monsters.

According to Greek mythology, Athena, the goddess of wisdom and war, oversaw the building of the vessel named Argo, the ship the hero Jason and his Argonauts (Argo's sailors) used to travel to Colchis on the Black Sea and fetch the Golden Fleece. This 1901 illustration shows sea nymphs keeping the Argo out of harm's way. These sea nymphs were said to be 50 in number and legend said that they helped sailors when attacked by sea monsters, as here.
