Global Hawk unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). This aircraft has a wingspan of 35 metres. Developed between 2001 and 2005 by Northrop Grumman for US military surveillance, Global Hawks are used by NASA for research. NASA obtained Global Hawks in 2007, and began operating them from 2009. Here, NASA Global Hawk number 871 is participating in a UAV-to-UAV refuelling demonstration with a second NASA Global Hawk. This refuelling demonstration is part of the KQ-X program (logos on the fuselage) funded by the USA's Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA). Photographed on 11 January 2012.
