Wreck of the Santa Maria. 1874 illustration depicting the wrecking of Christopher Columbus' ship the Santa Maria in December 1492. The Santa Maria was the flagship used by Italian explorer Christopher Columbus (1451-1506) on his 1492 voyage to discover the Americas. It ran aground off the coast of present day Haiti on 24th December 1492 and sank the next day.
