Thornapple seed. Light micrograph of a section through a poppy (Papaver sp.) seed head. The outer wall (pericarp) consists of an outer epidermis of thick-walled cells with scattered stomata, while the rest of the wall consists of parenchyma tissue (pink). The 13 fused chambers have incomplete radial walls or septa (blue, triangular). These septa are covered in placentas, each of which bears an ovule (round, red). These ovules are developing into seeds. The seeds have an outer testa (dark red), under which is the nutritive layer (endosperm, purple) and an inner embryo sac. Magnification: x5, when printed 10 centimetres wide.
