A mid-19th century drawing of Peterborough Cathedral in Cambridgeshire, known for the imposing Early English Gothic West Front (façade) which, with its three enormous arches, is without architectural precedent. The original church was damaged during the struggle between the Norman invaders and local folk-hero, Hereward the Wake, then destroyed by fire in 1116. The new church was built in the Norman style, begun by Abbot John de Sais and completed around 1193.
