An early 20th century French advertising poster from World War One, 1914-1918, showing Marianne holding a sword and the tattered French flag (the tricolor) while French troops march behind has been the national personification of the French Republic since the French Revolution, as a personification of liberty, equality, fraternity and reason, as well as a portrayal of the Goddess of Liberty. The artist is Georges Bertin Scott (1873-1942)

: These posters are often faded, creased and torn, with sections missing. They have therefore been restored as near as possible to their original condition.
