ERHAPS the leading- feature of South-ern California—the one which impressesitself most upon the visitor—is the long-ridg-e of jag-g-ed peaks bounding- the skylineon the east, separating- Southern Californiafrom the arid desert which lies beyond. Thismountain range, known on the north as theSierra Madre, or Mother Mountain, and onthe south as the San Bernardino range, is oneof the most picturesque and interesting-mountain regions of the United States. Itis not, as many suppose, a narrow ridg-e ofmountains. To realize its extent, one mustclimb to the summit of one of the hig-herpeaks, where, g-azing eastward, you will seemile after mile of rug-g-ed mountains, separ-ated by deep g-orges, or winding- creeks. A large portion of this mountain reg-ionhas been set aside by the g-overnment as aforest reserve. These mountains afford anideal picnic g-round for the residents of theplains.
