The two first became priests, and served the diocesefaithfully to the end of their days. I shall have occasion to speak of themhereafter. A granddaughter of Sarah Coomes, Matilda Lewis, is now knownas Sister Marcelline, of the Loretto society. J Some of these latter arrivals were, undoubtedly, from the older Catholicsettlements of Nelson and Washington counties, as were, also, very manyCatholics who came for permanent residence at a later day. CATHOLICITY IN KENTUCKY. 143 The first representative of the now large Irish Catholic element ofsociety in Breckinridge county was William McGary, born in Irelandin 1769. Coming to the United States in 1790, he settled nearHagerstown, Maryland, where he married Ann Daly. He removedwith his family to the neighborhood of Bardstown in 1809, where, inthe later years of his residence, he was employed with others in theconstruction of the cathedral. In , he removed to Breckinridgecounty, where his descendants are very numerous.* The next of the same nationality to come to the county was Lacy, a previous resident of Rome, Indiana, to which point he hademigrated in 1819. His progeny is not numerous in was not, however, until the year 1855, that there was any generalmovement of Irish emigrants to the county.
