ERSONS who are contem- plating the planting of peonies for market are of two distinct groups. There are those who have some land that they wish to em- ploy in growing more prof- itable crops and who know little about peonies or peony growing or the peony flower market. Then there arc those who are looking for a favorable location with suitable land upon whicli they^ may grow peonies for a prede- termined market and to meet certain known seasons and a definite existing demand. These latter know the market and in many cases know why, how and when peonies fit into that market. For the first group my advice would be to study the flower market, to learn whether the cut peonies were to be sold to a trade near the grower or whether they must be shipped to large cities with marketing centers that are known and recognized as such. If I were planning to plant to supply a near- by market for my flowers, I would disre- gard the shipping quali- ties of my varieties and clioose to plant the va- rieties that were most sliowy, so as to educate my own clientele to se- lect and demand the most choice and beauti- ful flowers. But if I were to plant for ship- jiing to a more or less ilistant market, I would choose varieties pri- marily for their keep- ing and shipping quali- ties, in which there is a great difference.
