PLACING THE REINFORCEMENT. The reinforcing bands in columns should be bent into squareshape with ends projecting inwardly as shown on Figure 3 and theso-called U-stirrups for beam reinforcement should be bent in themanner indicated on Figures 4 and 5. Bends in bent-up barsshould be made at the points of support for the boilers (See Fig-ures I and 2) and the angle at which the bend is made should beabout forty-five degrees (45°). No exact location can be givenfor the points at which boilers should be hung since such locations lyig-J r 1 i E LOCO M O T1V E 135 4 I. Fig. 4. will be determined by the size of the boiler and the setting details;in general, it is assumed that the distance apart of the hangers forany boiler will be about six inches less than the boiler diameterand that the hangers will be located symmetrically with respect tothe columns according to the general arrangement shown onFigures i and 2. Extreme care should be taken to insure that allreinforcing steel is accurately placed as called for and rigidly heldin position; to this end the separate members should be wiredtogether at every intersection and the whole system should besecured against displacement by wires, spacers and such othermeans as may seem best suited to each particular case. Bars maybe spliced by wiring them together provided that the distancewhich they lap on each other is equal to at least thirty (30) times
