Thatcher at work Dispite the down turn in employment within the building and housing market Chris Davey seen here and his partner Steven Craig who own and run The Thatchers have a full order book for at least the next year Chris is seen here thatching a cottage in Finchingfield Essex which with it s duck pond and windmill is reputed to be one of the most beautiful villages in Britain He is cutting a traditional scallop and diamond pattern using Long Straw which is grown in nearby Ongar in preference to imported reed from China A thatched cottage roof will last up to 30 years although the ridge will have to be replaced every 15 years Chris said I can t see us ever being without work after all everyone has to have a roof over their heads 2008
