BEIJING CHINA MAY 2006 Wang Ying, 22, holds a photograph of herself aged 17, before she has plastic surgery that has disfigured her face. A drama student, she wanted her prominent chin reduced by fat reduction but on the operating table at the small plastic surgery hospital she went to in Shanghai in October 2005 the plastic surgeon decided to fatten her face injecting her face with a colloid called Ao Mei Ding. She has been in great pain ever since. She cannot smile, has lost 3 teeth and her eyelashes. The liquid now has moved to the back of her neck . The colloid was popular with back street clinics because it was very cheap but in May 2006 it was banned by China's State Food and Drug Administration. The hospital has refused to take any responsibility for what has happened to her. Her case is part of a class action being brought by Beijing lawyers on behalf of 100 Ao Mei Ding victims including women whose breasts had to be removed after the colloid was used for breast enlargement.
