A richly - carved marblefireplace in the hall at Wood-houselee is said to havebeen brought from Wrychtis-housis. Notice should perhaps betaken here of a sculpturedstone (Fig. 14), easily visibleto the passer-by on the high-way, about halfway betweenWrychtis-housis and Wood-houselee. It is incorporatedin the back wall of the lodgeat the entrance to Comiston,an estate which has numerous associations with Edinburgh municipal honours and under-takings. It has evidently formed part of a dormer, and con-tains, cut in relief, the letters AC and M D, with the date 1610 deeply incised. It ter-minates in a volute ornament with arosette beneath and a lozenge stone may be taken to belong, likethe adjacent gate-piUars and the ruineddove-cote, to the old house of Comiston, demoli
