A. Occipito-anteriorPosition.—In this position, the occiput is placed behindor under the lower part of the symphysis pubis; the sides of the haad corre-sponding to those of the pelvis. The male blade will here be introduced first, because it will be found underneath in the locking. Two or three fingers of theright hand having been passed into the vagina, this branch is seized by theleft hand, either with the fingers, like a writing-pen, or, still better, with thewhole hand (though in both cases close to the pivot), and it is held inclinedobliquely over the right groin; the point of the blade is then entered at thevulva in the direction of its axis, and is slipped up along the palmar surface ofthe fingers; as the blade is passed into the vagina, the handle is gradually de-pressed between the womans thighs (of course, always approaching towards themedian line) in such a way as to direct the point of the blade in the direction of 806 DYSTOCIA. The blade is thus directed at once upon the side ofthe head, and along that of the pelvis, where it is ultimately to be this manoeuvre is being effected, the convex border of the blade ought torest upon and glide along the ring finger of the right hand, which is in thevagina, whilst at the same time its concave surface should bear exactly on theconvexity of the head, and follow its outline. The female blade is then introduced in the same manner precisely. Two or threefingers of the left hand are first passed in on theright side of the pelvis;- the branch being heldobliquely by the right hand in front of the leftgroin, with its point resting on the palmar surfaceof the left hand, is presented at the vulvar orifice;and, as its extremity is made to enter, the handleis
