Warning signs for traps placed in the Matukituki Valley near Wanaka. These have been placed by the Matukituki Charitable Trust, a group formed in 2013 to protect the natural environment of this very beautiful and much visited area of New Zealand. Throughout the country DOC (Department of Conservation) are working hard to eliminate non native species such as stoats, weasels, possums and rats that have caused the numbers of native species to fall dramatically. These animals were intoroduced by settlers in the past. The native species (including the national bird. the kiwi) were easy prey for the new comers. Apart from trapping DOC also used poisoned bait, especially 1080, to kill non-native species.
