By the occupation ofLookout Mountain he controlled the only railroad runningthrough Chattanooga, and compelled the Federals to bringup their supplies by wagons over a rough mountain road,which, starting from the city, crossed the river to the northside, and wound its way around and over the hills on Mocca-sin Point. Ferry, and thence by various passes reached Bridgeport,the base whence the Federals drev/ their supplies. Anotherbranch of the road pursued a course along the northernshore of the river from near Browns Ferry, far around thebends and turns of the stream to Bridgeport, and it was bythis route, sixty miles long, that the Union army had beencompelled to bring up its supplies, while the actual distancebetween Bridgeport and Chattanooga in a straight line wasabout twenty-five miles.
