It seems to be the accepted opinion of physicians at the 2T8 ETIOLOGY OF OSSEOUS DEFORMITIES OF present time that consumption is not an inherited disease,but that the patient inherits or acquires a weak constitution,and at certain periods, when the system is in proper con-dition, the bacilli find a habitat in the lungs and diseaseresults. The human mouth is known to contain bacteria of almostevery variety, and the author has taught students for the pastten years that it was his opinion that the mouth becomes thenidus for the accumulation of germs, and that when the sys-. Fig. 66. tem becomes in the proper condition, these germs bring onnot only tuberculosis, but pneumonia and affections of thethroat, including lesions ranging all the way from simple sorethroat to the most malignant form of diphtheria, and it seemsto the author that these conditions may be avoided, to a cer-tain extent, by keeping the mouth in a healthy who are susceptible to these diseases, but more par-ticularl}^ consumption, are those who have inherited weakconstitutions, such as neurotics and degenerates. Somaticsigns are quite noticeable in most of these cases, and by earlyrecognition, proper treatment with change of climate will, in THE HEAD, FACE, JAWS AND TEETH 279 most cases, prolong life for many years.
