13th century church of 'St Michael of the Rock' on top of Brent Tor, a steep hill overlooking Cornwall
The church of St. Michael [St Michael of the Rock] sits on top of a rocky outcrop just west of Dartmoor. It's height above sea level and its distinctive shape make it visible for miles around. The geology is a unique example of a weathered Carboniferous basaltic volcano. From the top of Brent Tor in good weather there are fine views in all directions. Brent Tor is close to the West Devon market town of Tavistock, the ancient village of Lydford and within the dramatic countryside of the Western edge of Dartmoor. It is thought that the site was used to signal dangers such as the advance of the Spanish Armada. Legend has it that a grateful early medieval sailor paid for the church after surviving near shipwreck, coming back to land he welcomed the familiar sight of the tor.
