He is descended on the paternalside in direct line from Major Richard Thorne ofGreat Neck, Long Island, a soldier in the Revolu- tionary War, and through him from William Thornewho settled in Lynn, Massachusetts, in 1638. Onhis mothers side he is descended from Dirck Ben-son, who settled in .Albany in 1640. He receivedhis early education in the Trinity Church School inNew York City, and graduated from Trinity Col-lege with the degree of Bachelor of .\rts, cum hoiiore,in 1885 receiving his Master of Arts degree in was Salutatorian of his class, and a member of PhiBeta Kappa. During the ensuing three years hewas a Master at the Cathedral School of Saint Paulin Garden City, Long Island, and in 1888 entered. THORXE the Law School of Columbia, receiving his degreein 1891 and took on graduation a prize tutorshippaying S500 a year for three years. He was ad-mitted to the Bar the year before his graduation,and since 1891 has been in active practice in NewYork City.
