Osteonecrosis of the hip. Coloured X-ray of a section through the pelvis of an obese 39-year-old African patient, showing massive destructive osteonecrosis of the head of the right femur (centre-left) and erosion of the acetabular roof - top of the acetabulum (the socket of the ball and socket joint). Osteonecrosis, or avascular necrosis (AVN), is death (necrosis) of the bone tissue due to an interruption of the blood supply. As seen here, AVN often leads to destruction of the joint surfaces.
