Medical students at the University of Veracruz use a patio on the campus for studying and relaxing between classes.

The Universidad Veracruzana - Mexico's third largest state university with some 55,000 students - is undergoing an ambitious experiment called Proyecto Aula, that seeks to improve the quality of teaching imparted by its 3,500 professors. The two-year program, which is funded by the university, is the first of its kind in Latin America and is the culmination of 10 years of reforms that seek to radically reshape the way students learn. Changes include a more flexible curriculum, financial support for faculty seeking to earn advanced degrees and a new emphasis on critical thinking and student-centered learning, such as participatory field work. For example, students in the Bioanalysis track at the medical school branch of the University in the port city of Veracruz are involved in a project with the state public health office that gathers data from diabetic patient samples (blood, urine and stool) in an attempt to measure the effects of dietary and lifestyle changes on insulin and glucose levels.
