It is probable, however, thatit was intended to convey the ideathat the chalice and paten were rest-ing upon the stem of the cross. Thepaten, which in this curious exampleis circular, is placed above the cha-lice, and by its side a smaller circlerepresents the host or Upon another fragment atthe same place, the chalice and waferare both represented on the dexterside of the cross, and the paten isomitted. In the very interestingfragment of another monumentalstone, lately discovered beneath thefloor of the church at Sproatley in the East Riding of Yorkshire,. Fragments of Monumental Andrews, Newcastle.
