Adipose tissue. Coloured scanning electron micrograph of fat-storing cells (yellow), also known as adipocytes, which build up the adipose connective tissue. Connective tissue fibres are seen at top left; they have a supporting function for the fat cells. Almost the entire volume of each adipocyte is occupied by a single lipid droplet mostly formed by triglycerides. Fat not used in metabolic processes is channeled towards these cells through small capillaries; a few of them are seen as blue tubules. Magnification: x236 at 6x7cm size.
