A young Khampa girl offers a silk scarf during a traditional dance at the Yushu Horse Racing Festival in Qinghai. Otherwise known as Yaji- the Festival of Summer Pleasures- the festival is one of many that occur simultaneously across Eastern Tibet. They originate from the great clan gatherings, where the nomadic tribes would meet annually to settle disputes over land, leadership and who had the fastest horse- or in some cases yak. The horsemen of the former kingdom of Kham still meet and compete in the same events, and although prestige is high on the takings and usually no blood is lost.
