Bee mites. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of bee mites on the body of a bee. These parasites feed by cutting into the surface membranes of the bee. Mites are arachnids (8- legged) and are hence related to ticks and spiders. In large numbers they can devastate colonies of bees, which is of particular concern since bees are often agriculturally very important: as both pollinators and honey producers.
