The county gaol and bride-well, at the western extremity of Fisherton-Anger, waserected in 1818, at an expense of about £30,000. The seat of the diocese was originally establishedabout the beginning of the tenth century, at Wilton, inthis county, where it continued under the superin-tendence of eleven successive bishops. Hermannus,the last of these, having been appointed to the seeof Sherborne, annexed that bishopric to Wilton, andfounded a cathedral for the united dioceses at OldSarum. The see remained at Old Sarum till the year1220, when Richard le Poore transferred the episcopalchair to Salisbury, where it has since remained. Underthe provisions of the act 6th and 7th of William IV.,cap. 77, a considerable alteration has been made inthe territorial extent of the diocese, which now com-prises the county of Dorset, and part of Wiltshire. The6. establishment consists of abishop, dean, precentor,chancellor, treasurer, fivecanons residentiary, threearchdeacons (for Dorset, Sa-rum, and Wilts), a sub-dean, succentor, thirty-eightprebendaries, four minor ca-nons or priest-vicars, sixsinging men, eight choris-ters, and an organist.
