Thisoffice, at that time an important and responsible declined. Governor Snyder then tendered himthe positions of register, recorder, prothonotary, clerkof the Orphans Court, and clerk in the Sessions Courtof Lebanon County, which he accepted. In the dis-charge of the duties of this office he continued untilthe expiration of Governor Snyders term, when hewas recommissioned under the appointment of Gov-ernor Findlay. In the early part of 1821. thoughwarmly solicited by large numbers of the citizens to 294 HISTORY OF LEBANON i;dvi:r\or shulze. remain in this position, lie resigned, and was in Octo-ber of that year elected to represent Lebanon Countyin the House of Representatives. In the followingyear he was chosen a State senator for Dauphin andLebanon Counties, carrying the district by a largemajority, though opposed by a well-organized he had been a year in the Senate he was se-lected as a candidate for Governor by the Republicanparty, and was elec-ted by a majorityof over twenty-fivethousand. .He wasnominated for asec-ond term in 1826,and was electedwith a unanimityunparalleled in thehistory of the gov-ernment, receivingover seventy-twothousand votes,while his opponent,John Sergeant, gotbut about one thou-sand.
