Thomas Howard (1585-1646), 14th Earl of Arundel, 4th Earl of Surrey, and 1st Earl of Norfolk, an English patron of the arts known as the 'collector earl'. On the eve of the first English Civil War, in 1642, the earl’s Roman Catholic sympathies prompted him into self-imposed exile. After donating £54,000 to the king's cause, he ended his days living in a villa near Padua, Italy. Square detail of an engraving created in the 1700s after a portrait by Sir Anthony Van Dyck (1599-1641).

Thomas Howard (1585-1646), 14th Earl of Arundel, 4th Earl of Surrey, and 1st Earl of Norfolk. Square detail of an original copperplate engraving by an unknown engraver after a portrait by Sir Anthony Van Dyck (1599-1641). This engraving was first used in the 1740 edition of 'History of the Rebellion and Civil Wars in England' by Edward Hyde (1609-1674), Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs to King Charles I, who was later raised to the peerage as 1st Earl of Clarendon; his history of the English Civil War is frequently referred to as 'Clarendon's Rebellion’. Thomas Howard, known as 'the collector earl', was a prominent English courtier during the reigns of King James I and King Charles I. He amassed a huge collection of paintings, drawings, sculpture, prints and books, fostered the careers of Inigo Jones and Wenceslaus Hollar, and commissioned portraits by masters such as Mytens, Rubens and Van Dyck. In 1642, on the eve of the first English Civil War, the earl's Roman Catholic sympathies prompted him into self-imposed exile. After donating £54,000 to the king's cause, he ended his days living in a villa near Padua, Italy. Sir Anthony Van Dyck, famous for his portraits of King Charles I, his family and their courtiers, was a Flemish artist who became the leading court painter in England.
