A greatadvantage of leather hangings is the fact that they are less damagedthan cloth and wool by dampness and insects; they lose little of theirbrilliance with age; they collect little dust, and that little is easilyremoved by washing with a sponge; they do not furnish nests for themoths in summer that lay their eggs in other tapestries. Yet theirancient vogue no longer continues, and nowadays we see them rele-gated to the entrance halls of country houses. Leather hangings aremade of skins of calf, kid or sheep, which seem gilded; which aresilvered, raised in relief and sewed together. In Paris, sheepskins areusually used, although calf and kid are more beautiful and moredurable; but they cost more.
