These are a few of the simple gestureswhich may be termed Fear THE ART OF ELOCUTION. 27 VOCAL EXERCISE PREPARATORY TOREADING OR SPEAKING IN PUBLIC. A beneficial influence is exerted on thevoice, by the most vigorous and sustainedexercises upon the elementary sounds, andby reading and declaiming with the utmostforce consistent with purity of tone, imme-diately before retiring for the night. Theorgans of speech are thus rendered flexiblefor exercise on the succeeding day. Evenan interval of only an hour or two, betweenthe preliminary exercise and the subsequenteffort, will, in most cases, afford the organsof speech time to rest, and resume theirnatural state.
