Mike Walker Pictures Emirates tower…1 The newly painted Spinnaker Tower now known as the Emirates Spinnaker Tower Now known as the Emirates Spinnaker Tower, the 560 foot edifice - the tallest building outside London - has been painted in blue and white, not quite the colours originally intended by the airline sponsors. Emirates wanted the tower to be draped in their red and gold emblem but after a 10,000 on-line petition of protest, the company and city council agreed to a change. The protestors felt red was inappropriate because it was the colour of south coast football rivals Southampton. Emirates are paying around £5m spread over five years for the privilege of turning the £36m, previously white, tower, which is two and a half times taller than Nelson’s Column, into the blue and white building it now is. .
