Torboung is a Kuki-Zo dominated area and according to the villagers, all these houses were allegedly burnt down by the tribes of Meitei community on the night of May 3, 2023. More than 115 people were killed and 40,000 displaced from their homes in ethnic riots that erupted in Manipur on May 3. Tensions erupted in the state after the majority Meitei community demanded Scheduled Tribe status and the hill tribes resisted the demand.
