Colchicum is commonly called 'autumn crocus' which can be confusing as it is not closely related to crocuses except in appearance and some true crocuses also flower in Colchicum bears the common name 'Bare naked ladies' because of its unusual growth pattern; sending up flowers without leaves in autumn. The leaves appear in spring and die off in the summer. Colchicine is a substance contained in the plant which is poisonous but has some therapeutic applications. Some poisonings have ocurred when the leaves are mistaken for those of wild garlic, known as ramsons. Colchicum is dangerous to cats.
