Supra-patellar bursitis, or Housemaid's knee, showing a tennis-ball sized swelling above the person's right knee; the left knee is normal. Bursitis is the inflammation of a bursa, a sac of fibrous tissue lined with synovial membrane & filled with fluid. Bursae exist where body parts move in contact, where they serve to reduce friction. They become inflamed through injury, infection or by rheumatoid synovitis. In the absence of any infection, bursitis is treated with rest & possible steroid injections.
