Broken Statue, Pakaitore, Whanganui. In 1995 Whanganui Maori occupied contested land at Pakaitore by the Whanganui River. During this time a statue of John Ballance there was smashed. Ballance was a Whanganui newspaper editor who later became Premier. He associated with a militia unit the Kai Iwi Rifles, formed to fight against Titokowaru's forces.
