This portrait (which still hangs in theparlor at St. Marys) represents him in the act of administering the rite of confirmation to a class of four girls. It will be remembered that it was Bishop Ives who first interested Dr. Smedes in founding St. Marys. This portrait has always been an object of special interest to St. Marys girls, and the question of whowere the originals of the girls painted in the group is an ever interesting subject of discussion now carried on inthe third generation.
