Statue of a monkey (good luck charm) on the facade of the town hall of Mons (Hainaut), Belgium

Several centuries old, the exact origin of the presence of the monkey hanging next to the porch on the facade of Mons Town Hall is not known. There are 3 hypotheses: the masterpiece of a blacksmith, the sign of a tavern 11, or a pillory for "rowdy" children. The only sure thing is that it has become the lucky charm of the City of Mons that will bring good luck if you stroke its skull with your left hand. A legend created from scratch by Paul Heupgen in 1930.
