The modern build-ings are mostly low and built ofwood, as they withstand earth-quake shocks much better thanhigh stone structures. The greaterpart of the foreign trade of theislands passes through Manila. The second port in importanceis Iloilo, on the island of exchange for hemp, tobaccoand sugar, the islands importmainly rice, flour, cloth, coal andkerosene. The foreign trade. amounts yearly to about $30,000,- 000 — one sixth being with the United States. A large part of the trade is carried on with Great Britain. Guam. Almost due east of Manila, about 1600 miles outin the Pacific, rises the island of Guam. It is the southern-most of a chain of islands stretching northward for about 500 Filipinos (Philippine Natives) and Buffalo. miles (see inset on map of Philippines; also full-page map ofAustralia, 3Iicronesia, etc.). Magellan named these the La-drones, or thieves islands, because the natives stole some of his goods. The islands are small andmostly volcanic, some having activecraters. Most ofthe people live on the island ofGuam — fully half of them beingin the capital town of Agana. Atthe close of the reeent war withSpain, Guam was ceded to theUnited States.
