Stonehenge and Merlin. 14th-century manuscript illustration showing the building of Stonehenge by Merlin and giants. Stonehenge, located in Wiltshire, UK, is a prehistoric circle of standing stones. It dates from 3000 BC to 2000 BC, with different phases identified in that period. The story that its construction was ordered by Merlin (from the Arthurian legends) was told in the 12th century by Geoffrey of Monmouth in his 'Historia Regum Britanniae'. This illustration is from a mid-14th century abridged version (the 'Egerton Brut') of the 12th-century verse chronicle 'Roman de Brut' by the Norman poet Wace. This poem was itself based on Monmouth's 'Historia'.
