NEW GIANT WHITE CENTAUREA CENTAUREA AMERICANA ALBA 599 This native annual flower is also known as the Star Thistle. It is showy when in bloom and a free and hardy plant. Although an annual it grows to a large size in the one season, and the immense heads of double, flufify blooms are quite as showy in flower bor- ders as pasonies or hollyhocks. The color is almost pure white. The stems shoot up from i to 3 feet, sturdy and strong, branching near the ends and every branch bearing a bloom. It is an excellent plant for cut flowers, the flower lasting several days when cut and the stalks being long and wiry. Per pkt., 10c. It is a long time since a plant has been introduced which has met with such unanimous approval as the charm- ing Schizanthus (S. Wisetonensis) which we here illustrate. This plant, which can be had in order from March to August, produces its flow- ers in ihe utmost profusion in con- tinuous and successive crops, each new growth (when the planthas once arrived at the flowering stage) pro- ducing a fresh mass of bloom.
