Recovery position, illustration. Sequence of four images showing a patient being placed in the recovery position. The sequence runs from top left to top right to bottom left to bottom right. This position is used (often for unconscious patients) when the patient is breathing and has a heartbeat, provided there has been no injury to the neck or back. The position (completed at bottom right) will hold the patient stable, keeping the airways clear and allowing vomit or secretions to be safely expelled.
