Lake Dwellings (Pile dwellings - Pfahlbauten) and associated artefacts. Based on mid-19th century work of Swiss archaeologist Ferdinand Keller. Winter of 1853-54 was dry and water level in Lake Zurich fell. At Meilen dredging for land reclamation revealed ancient wooden piles driven into bed of lake, as well as stone hammers, axes, celts, etc. Engraving published London 1888. Continuous occupation of site from Stone Age through to Iron Age.
