These figures may be in-tended to represent angels, or more probably ring is in perfect condition ; the surface in-dicates that it has been under water, probably inthe Tiber. I purchased it at Rome. It may beascribed to the later fourth or early in the fifthcentury. On the subject of the pagan figure of Victory beingused on Christian objects, vide De Rossi, Bulletinofor 18G7, p. 77 and 84, on a monument from secf/iid di piombo, a leaden pail or situla, on VOL. The formerprobably represents the martyr Perpctua, the Victory thesymbol of triumph. A figure of Victory was alsoimpressed on the coins of the early Christian emperors,associated with the sign of the cross or sacred it occurs on consular diptychs of Christian times,and this, notwithstanding that the curia and the altarand cultus of Victory had been abolished. See alsolienier (Insertp. de VAlgerie) who records a marble fromCirta, on which Victory is represented with a crown inthe right and a palm in the left hand ; three crosses andthe words A . deo . datvr . bictoria prove that theVictory is the emblem of spiritual as of moral triumph,symbolising the rnanus Dei, the Divine influence. ggfes 40.
