The young looking Dalai Lama shown is very likely the 5th Dalai Lama, Ngawang Lobsang Gyatso. He lived from 1617 to 1682, although his death was kept a secret until his successor was found in 1697. At the time of publication in 1683, Mallet would have believed the 5th Dalai Lama to have been the incumbent.
