Special Buildings, etc. One of the most satisfactory small hospitals, in point of heating andventilation, is the Barnes Hospital at the Old Soldiers Home, near Wash-ington. This contains four wards, in two stories ; each ward has twelvebeds, and an allowance of 1,500 cubic feet per bed. The wards are heatedby coils of hot Avater, placed in air-chambers in the basement at the flow of water to each coil can be regulated by a cock ; but it requiresau hour for a coil to cool down, and an arrangement for more speedychange is to be desired. (See Figs. 105 and 106.) The fresh-air flues are of 470 AMERICAN APPENDIX TO PARKES terra-cotta pipe built iuto the walls. The foul-air flues are lined with tin,aud are cleaned daily ; there are two for each ward, one above the ceilingand one below the floor, at the middle; each has five inlets ; and thepatients being under military discipline the inlets are not defiled as theywould be likely to be in a civil hospital. These ducts lead to an aspirator chimney, heated by the boiler flues and kitch-en Hues, or by a special fire when the boileris not in operation in moderate weather. Themean velocity of the upward current of air is180 feet per minute ; with good fires in thegrates at the base the highest recorded veloci-ty was 700 feet. A fan is used to force coolair through the heating flues in moderateweather, when it is unsafe to open an experiment, all the outlets to a certainward having been closed for thirty-five min-utes, the air was found to contain per10,000 of which was reduced to byten minutes use of
