Steam turbines; a practical and theoretical treatise for engineers and students, including a discussion of the gas turbine . INE turbine much used in Europe. The by-pass ports open only atoverload, and the speed is regulated for small fluctuations bythe throttling method. In the figure the centrifugal governor ismarked. 9, and operates by means of levers a balanced throttlevalve. The by-pass valve 7, on the other hand, is operated bythe pressure on the piston 10. Since this piston and theby-pass valve are on the same valve stem, they are raised orlowered together according as the pressure in the steam chest ishigh or low. With a high pressure the piston rises, lifting withit the valve 7, thus uncovering the ports, shown on one side ofthe turbine at 6, which admit steam through the pipes 3, 4, and 5to different parts of the turbine casing. Obviously there is aconsiderable change in the power developed immediately afterthe steam is admitted to one of the pipes 3, 4, or 5; and theconsequent fluctuation in speed is taken care of by the throttlinggovernor 9, or by an electrical solenoid governor indicated at Fig. 179. By-pass Valve Arrangement for a Parsons Turbine. A simpler type of by-pass valve and governor arrangement isillustrated in Fig. 179. The by-pass valve is here directly underthe control of the governor. The governor is marked 9 in thefigure and operates a by-pass piston valve 7. The steam entersthe turbine through the steam chest over the by-pass there is no overload on the turbine, the steam passesthrough the side port, which is shown open in the figure, to the GOVERNING STEAM TURBINES 307 steam space 2 below, and from here it passes through the , however, there is an overload, the by-pass valve 7 is raisedby the governor and high-pressure steam is admitted throughthe pipe 3 to some lower pressure stages. With still more over-load the ports for the pipes 4 and 5 are also opened and high-pressure steam is admitted to stages intend
