Scenic view of the Boboli Gardens of Palazzo Pitti with the Basin of Neptune and the Fountain of Neptune in autumn, Florence, Tuscany, Italy


The Basin of Neptune was created in 1777-1778 in the place of a nursery. Here are collected the waters that irrigate the whole garden and have the source further upstream, under the Garden of the Knight. At the centre of the basin stands the Fountain of Neptune, with the statue of the God of the sea emerging from a rocky spur on which there are also naiads and newts. The main statue is made in 1571 by the sculptor Stoldo Lorenzi and the fountain is called by the irreverent Florentines the "Fountain of the pitchfork" or "of the fork" due to the trident challenged by Neptune in the act of hitting. Around the fountain there are sloping grassy terraces, which reproduce the shape of the Amphitheatre below.
