Infrared image of the Messier 78 nebula (M78, or NGC 2068), showing regions of reflected light (blue) from hot young stars along with streams of dust (dark) and jets (red) emerging from stars in the process of formation. M78 is around 4 light years across, and is one of the brightest reflection nebulae in the night sky. It is located in the constellation of Orion, some 1600 light years from Earth. Imaged by the VISTA infrared survey telescope at the Paranal Observatory, Chile.
