Ever since the so-called 'Islamic State' spread into Iraq and Iraqi Kurdistan the Kurdish Peshmerga forces have been fighting them fiercely. On the frontlines around the town Kirkuk the Peshmerga have been able to push Daesh back over 10km into the desert. Now the frontlines are relatively quiet, the Peshmerga say. From time to time teams of IS-suicide-bombers try to attack their lines but most are stopped before reaching the lines of the Peshmerga. Still, them are very aware of the deadly threat just 500m away from them. (Photo by Willi Effenberger/Pacific Press)
